Wahid Faghir earned ten-man VfB Stuttgart a point with the last kick of the game, cancelling out Taiwo Awoniyi's opener for a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Stuttgart 1-1 Union
Goal: 0-1 Awoniyi 27' (assist: Becker), 1-1 Faghir 90'+3 (assist: Didavi)
Red card: Karazor 57'
Given the threat Awoniyi posed in the opening exchanges, it was no surprise that the Union top scorer broke the deadlock with the first effort of the game to hit the target. Sheraldo Becker provided the assist, but it was testament to Awoniyi's soaring confidence levels that he picked his spot and found it perfectly with a fine curling effort from the edge of the box. Wataru Endo tried to copy him minutes later, but Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe tracked back and managed to tip his dipping shot behind. That was the closest Stuttgart would come to levelling matters in the first half, although their performance nevertheless provided some encouragement for the second 45 minutes.
The wind was taken from their sails in the 57th minute when Atakan Karazor picked up his first ever red card to leave the hosts with ten men for over half an hour. Union made the most of the extra space to control proceedings and leave the Swabians little room to do any damage. Pellegrino Matarazzo turned to Daniel Didavi in the closing stahes to try to invent something, while his opposite number Urs Fischer responded by removing the architects of his team's lead, Becker and Awoniyi, and packing his midfield. The Swabians did manage to find a gap when Mateo Klimowicz looped a header onto the roof of the net, and there was time for Faghir to salvage a draw with the last kick of the game, the 18-year-old's shot taking a wicked deflection off former Stuttgart defender Timo Baumgartl to beat Luthe.
