Hertha Berlin have signed Germany international midfielder Suat Serdar from Schalke on a five-year contract.

Serdar missed 12 games with a hamstring injury and illness last season, but he still chipped in with two goals and three assists from midfield - ultimately not enough to see Schalke maintain their top-flight status.

Nonetheless regarded as one of the most promising central midfielders in Germany, the Bingen am Rhein-born, Mainz-raised 24-year-old made his Germany debut against Argentina in October 2019 and has appeared four times since, dashing any hope Turkey had of capping him.

"Suat is a tech-savvy player who can drive the game from midfield and create moments of surprise," said Hertha's new sporting director, Fredi Bobic.

"Even if last season was difficult for him, he has great potential and strengths that have already put him in the frame for the German national team. He'll give our midfield more dynamism and flexibility."

Serdar's last international outing was Germany's 1-1 draw with Spain last September, but he has not been called up for Die Mannschaft's UEFA Euro 2020 campaign, which kicks off against France next Tuesday.

A versatile box-to-box midfielder, Serdar is welcome addition for the Old Lady, who saw Sami Khedira call time on his career at the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign. He is keen to get started,

"It quickly became clear to me that I wanted to switch to Hertha," he said. "In the talks, the club showed me a clear vision that convinced me and appeals to me. I'd like to do my part to ensure that we play a much better season together."
