Timo Werner (c.) had a field day for RB Leipzig against Teutonia Ottensen in the DFB Cup first round.

Timo Werner scored a first-half hat-trick as RB Leipzig began their DFB Cup defence with an emphatic 8-0 win over fourth-tier Teutonia Ottensen.

Teutonia Ottensen 0-8 RB Leipzig
Goals: 0-1 Werner 19' (assist: Forsberg), 0-2 Werner 20' (assist: Silva), 0-3 Silva 41' (assist: Werner), 0-4 Werner 43' (assist: Forsberg), 0-5 Silva 53' (assist: Szoboszlai), 0-6 Forsberg 56' (assist: Szoboszlai), 0-7 Nkunku 77' (assist: Silva), 0-8 Olmo 90'

Rescheduled due to Leipzig's Supercup commitments, the the 2022/23 DFB Cup's penultimate first-round tie was about as one-sided as they come. Andre Silva served notice of his side's intentions with a seventh-minute header against the woodwork, before Werner scored twice in the space of 60 seconds with two very similar finishes from inside the Ottensen area. The siege continued as Xaver Schlager struck a post from distance and Werner went within a whisker of turning in a Silva cross. Werner returned the favour for Leipzig's third goal, clinically dispatched by Silva, who was involved in the build-up for their fourth. Emil Forsberg played the final ball as Werner completed his hat-trick with aplomb.

The cat-and-mouse games continued into the second half as David Raum and Forsberg were denied a slice of the goal-scoring pie by Teutonia goalkeeper Yannick Zummack. Normal service was resumed when Silva showed a great piece of control from Dominik Szoboszlai and turn Tjorben Uphoff, before slotting in his second of the contest. Szoboszlai conjured up Leipzig's next goal within three minutes, the Hungarian's cross finding Forsberg for a deft back-heel from inside the six-yard area. Szoboszlai shot wide from close range, while Zummak denied Christopher Nkunku once, but not twice as the Leipzig substitute added a cool seventh. Dani Olmo made it eight with the final kick of a devastating display of attacking football.
