Thomas Müller was given a spectacular farewell by Bayern Munich and the club's fans in his final home game on Matchday 33.
Müller, 35, has played for Bayern his entire career, having joined the club as a 10-year-old, so it was always going to be an emotional occasion when he took to the Allianz Arena pitch one last time.
Named in the starting line-up by head coach Vincent Kompany for Bayern's Matchday 33 assignment against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which they won 2-0, Müller was visibly taken aback by the scale of the tifo in his honour when he walked out onto the pitch for kick-off.
Club officials then offered their own parting gifts with a bouquet of flowers and a commemorative picture, as the crowd in Munich applauded.
Harry Kane and Michael Olise ultimately got the goals for Bayern, despite Müller's efforts to sign off in style, but his big moment came in the 84th minute when he was substituted off for Serge Gnabry.
The stadium erupted as Bayern players and coaching staff formed a guard of honour for the attacker, whose departure from the club this summer brings the curtain down on a trophy-filled career spanning 15 years, over 500 Bundesliga appearances, and 150 top-flight goals.
"Football and the people have inspired me in 750 games for Bayern," Müller told the official Bayern website after the final whistle.
"What's really great is that we will be presented with the trophy in our own stadium. There are 75,000 hearts beating for me here, so I'm a bit scared. I can't take that for granted, I can't quite come to terms with it all at the moment."
“I think it was a night that was perfect in many ways for us," said Kompany after the final whistle. "It’s never easy saying goodbye to a legend. But if you have to say goodbye then this is a good way. What Thomas Müller has built at this club will never be forgotten.”
Jamal Musiala added his voice to the chorus of praise, saying: "We all know how Thomas is. I think this is a special moment for everyone here, for the players, the coaches, the fans. We all appreciate him very much, as a player and as a friend. There's a lot of love towards him. I know this is a big moment for him, I hope he enjoyed it."
Thomas Müller, the Bundesliga salutes you!
