After ending his Bayern Munich career at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, what's next for Thomas Müller?

After his 25 years at Bayern Munich came to an end, Thomas Müller has now confirmed his intentions for the future and given a hint as to what might come next in his life.

It was the big question for many fans when it was announced earlier this year that the curtain would be coming down on Müller’s remarkable career at Bayern. “Where next? Will he just retire?”

The 35-year-old has now given a (partial) answer to that.

“I’ve still got the desire to play football, so I’ve decided to keep playing. I’ll continue to be a footballer,” Müller confirmed in an interview while recording an advert.

So, where will that be?

After a club career spanning 726 games and 250 goals in the red of Bayern, could Müller really opt to represent another team in Germany?

“It’ll definitely be an experience abroad for me. I’m looking forward to that,” the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner stated.

Amidst rumours of offers from around the globe, the most decorated player in German football history – tied with the retired Toni Kroos – specifically mentioned one place.

“The MLS is obviously an interesting league, especially looking ahead to the World Cup in America next year.

“I love the football stage and also the pressure to perform. As long as my body holds up, I want to take that chance,” he added.

Müller is also aware of how things will change being away from an environment he’s become a master of over two and a half decades.

“Though I’m not playing in Europe or the Champions League anymore, I’m curious. And I’m also fully aware that leaving Bayern means things will be different, but I’m excited about that,” said the record 13-time Bundesliga and two-time Champions League winner.

Müller will no doubt be watching when Bayern kick off the 2025/26 campaign – their first season without their iconic No.25 in the team since 2007/08 – away at VfB Stuttgart in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on 16 August. Will we know by then exactly where he will be playing this year?
