Thorgan Hazard and his Borussia Mönchengladbach team will travel to Dortmund on Friday night with the chance to cut their rival’s lead at the top to just three points heading into the winter break.
Hazard has been enjoying the best start to a season of his professional career in 2018/19. The Belgian international has already scored nine goals and provided seven assists in the league, just one short of his best ever total in the Bundesliga for goals scored of 10.
The 25-year-old was at the centre of another Gladbach home win on Tuesday, as he scored to help seal a 2-0 win. The victory came on the same night that Borussia Dortmund suffered their first defeat of the season, at the hands of Fortuna Düsseldorf in a 2-1 loss.
With a six-point gap now standing between the Foals in second and BVB in top spot, Friday night’s showdown under the lights becomes even more unmissable. Hazard says he and his team will be travelling to Dortmund with only one thing in mind.
“We’re going to Dortmund to win,” Hazard told bundesliga.com on Tuesday night. “We have a difficult game ahead of us on Friday. Dortmund are rightly in first place; they’ve played the best football in the first half of the season.
“But we also have a lot of quality, as shown by the results and the table. If we played as we did against Nuremberg it might be difficult, but I’m looking forward to a game like this under the floodlights. We have to give everything we have left before the Christmas break.”
Dortmund have made the Signal Iduna Park as much of a fortress as Gladbach have with their home, Borussia-Park. Lucien Favre has yet to suffer a Bundesliga defeat at home, dropping points only once in a 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin on Matchday 9.
Hazard has yet to score against Dortmund in his six Bundesliga meetings with the black-and-yellows and has been part of only one victory against BVB before Friday’s meeting. But if ever there was a time to change the record.
