RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner has been ruled out of Germany's 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign through injury, the club have confirmed.

Werner went off injured in the first half of Leipzig's 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on 2 November. Tests have revealed a torn syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle that will keep him sidelined until the new year.

Werner had been in flying form for Leipzig, producing five goals and an assist across his last six competitive appearances. The 26-year-old was widely expected to lead the line for Germany in Qatar, having started 11 of 15 games under Hansi Flick, scoring eight goals.

Flick is scheduled to annouce his provisional World Cup squad on 10 November. Germany play Oman in a friendly on 16 November, before taking on Japan in their Group E opener on 23 November. Spain and Costa Rica complete the section.
