Bundesliga
Had Usain Bolt's trial with Borussia Dortmund led to a permanent contract, Lukas Klünter would have been left in the wake of just one Bundesliga footballer.
As it happened, the fastest man on the planet made only a cameo appearance in Westphalia, allowing the Hertha Berlin defender to boast about being the fastest man in the Bundesliga – just.
bundesliga.com takes a look at the Bundesliga's top ten speed demons and how they have turned on the turbo to help their teams this term.
1) Lukas Klünter - 21.99 mph
The Hertha Berlin right-back may only have made seven appearances so far this season, but he's clearly been excited to be back on the pitch in recent weeks. On Matchday 30, Künter recorded the fastest speed of any Bundesliga player this season against Hannover. And at only 22, the German could still get faster...
2) Ante Rebic – 21.81 mph
Just shy of being the fastest man in the Bundesliga, Rebic has been blazing a trail past opposition defences with purpose, scoring nine goals and four assists in the Bundesliga and helping Eintracht Frankfurt to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
2) Achraf Hakimi – 21.81 mph
Apparently, they have had to re-seed the right-hand side of the pitch at the Signal Iduna Park given the frequency with which Hakimi has torn up the grass on his countless sprints down the wing. His crosses have led to four goals, while he has scored two himself in Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga title challenge.
3) Jerome Roussillon – 21.79 mph
One of the standout stars in Wolfsburg's surprising charge for European football, Roussillon has done on the left what Hakimi has done on Dortmund's right, only it is the Volkswagen Arena greenkeeper whose workload has been doubled. The turbo-charged French full-back has delivered five assists and scored three for the Wolves following his arrival from Montpellier last summer.
4) Kai Havertz – 21.76 mph
The only thing Kai Havertz doesn’t do quickly is age. Still just 19, the Germany international has had a hand in a third of Bayer Leverkusen's goals this season, scoring a personal best of 13 and using his pace to good effect as the pivot of Die Werkself's game.
5) Konrad Laimer – 21.74 mph
Laimer has made a place in the Leipzig starting line-up his own this season. His pace is a big part of that, helping him outfox opposition midfielders and allowing the former Salzburg man to initiate many of RB Leipzig's deadly trademark counterattacks.
6) Lukas Klostermann – 21.69 mph
One of Laimer's many outlets can almost keep up with him, with Leipzig full-back Lukas Klostermann marauding down the right and supporting the attack with three goals of his own.
7) Ihlas Bebou – 21.69mph
Hannover's season may not have been much to write home about, but winger Ihlas Bebou has fuelled some excitement at the AWD Arena with his bursts of pace, supplying three goals and as many assists.
8) Robin Bormuth – 21.67 mph
Blink and you might have missed Robin Bormuth at the heart of the Fortuna Düsseldorf defence. True enough, he has only featured in ten matches, but when he has been there, he's been so fast, you might not have noticed.
9) Nico Schulz – 21.64 mph
While on many of his sprints down the left, Nico Schulz caught the eye of Germany coach Joachim Löw and is now bursting his way into the national team set-up, thanks in no small way to his five assists for Hoffenheim this season.
9) Kingsley Coman – 21.64 mph
The fastest man to seven league titles, Bayern Munich's 22-year-old insists he is not following in Franck Ribery's footsteps, and his speed stats would vouch for the fact that he's a step ahead of his compatriot as Bayern's latest French wing wizard.
10) Pablo Maffeo – 21.63 mph
Stuttgart's Spanish full-back Pablo Maffeo completes the top 10 with his flying forays from full-back an additional weapon in the Swabians' armoury.
