Top 10 long-range free-kick goals

Hakan Çalhanoğlu's wonder strike for Hamburg against Borussia Dortmund back in 2014 was an unforgettable goal, but which other players have found the back of the net with free-kicks from ridiculous positions? bundesliga.com presents the top 10...

1) Hakan Çalhanoğlu - 41.00 metres

It's hard to believe a free-kick will ever be scored from further out that the now Inter Milan man's legendary goal against Dortmund back in 2014. Already 2-0 up and entering into the 90th minute, the then HSV No. 9 went for the spectacular, leaving the entire Volksparkstadion, Dortmund custodian Roman Weidenfeller, and BVB gaffer Jürgen Klopp in absolute disbelief as to what they had just witnessed.

2) Maximilian Arnold - 39.14m

Wolfsburg's record appearance maker has proven his set-piece accumen time and again for the Wolves over the years. Wrong-footing Mainz keeper Robin Zentner with an audacious knuckleball in a 3-0 win over the Carnival club back in November 2022, the German showed why his technique his second to none.

3) Filip Kostić - 37.93m

Although he was perhaps better known for his assists rather than his goals whilst a Frankfurt player, Kostić still popped up with some incredible strikes during his four-year tenure with the Eagles. Swinging this free-kick in against Freiburg back in 2021, the Serbian's delivery, disguised as a cross, found no takers in the box, deceiving Freiburg's then keeper Mark Flekken as it ricocheted in off the post, sealing all three points on the road for Eintracht that day.

4) Dominik Szoboszlai - 35.57m

Leipzig's departed Hungarian maestro was no stranger to a spectacular strike during his time at the Red Bull Arena, but few came close to this effort against VfB Stuttgart on his full debut in 2021. Szoboszlai's sweetly struck delivery from the left touchline sailed right through the box, bamboozling Kevin Müller in goal as it nestled into the far corner.

5) Vladimír Darida - 35.18m

The 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign may have been one to forget for Hertha fans, as the Berliners dodged relegation via a successful play-off victory, but it did bring this memorable moment from Darida. Trailing 2-0 home to Cologne, the Czech midfielder launched what was seemingly a cross from the set-piece into the box, which - like many others on this list - wasn't met with any sort of touch before eluding the goalkeeper and ending up in the back of the net.

6) Joshua Kimmich - 33.74m

There are very few things the Bayern midfielder can't do with a ball at his feet, which he proved emphatically on Matchday 1 of the 2022/23 campaign in a 6-1 demolition of Frankfurt. Kimmich's low drive opened the scoring for the Bavarians, with the German international superbly exploiting a gap at the near post left by goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who had positioned himself further over in anticipation of a cross.

7) Dominik Szoboszlai - 31.75m

The second free-kick on this list from the now Liverpool star, and the second one against Stuttgart: there can be no doubt that Szoboszlai was going for goal himself with this one. From a central position, the bounce was enough to throw off goalkeeper Müller, who got a hand to it but couldn't quite scoop it away to safety.

Dominik Szoboszlai's only two Bundesliga free-kick goals came from considerable distances against Stuttgart.

8) Vincenzo Grifo - 30.47m

Only Arnold has more Bundesliga free-kick goals than Grifo, and this effort is the first of two from the Italian to make it into the top 10. It came against top-quality opposition, too, as the forward curled home with the aid of the post to put Freiburg ahead against Borussia Dortmund after just six minutes in August 2021.

9) Vincenzo Grifo - 30.03m

Grifo clearly enjoys a goal at the start of the season, as he showed in 2022/23 against Augsburg. Freiburg had just scored after half-time on the opening day to make it 1-0, when their No.10 stood over a free-kick from the right. It appeared as though he was trying to find a team-mate's head, but it sailed past everybody and into the far top corner. Another stunning effort from a man who scored four free-kick goals that campaign alone in all competitions.

Vincenzo Grifo's set-piece execution is up their with the very best of them.

10) Maximilian Arnold - 29.52m

Arnold's second inclusion on this list came against Greuther Fürth in 2021/22. The game was in the balance in the 70th minute, when the midfielder stood over a free-kick, and he subsequently did what he does best. He was helped slightly by a deflection off Jamie Leweling, which wrong-footed Sascha Burchert, but it proved to be the decisive goal as Wolfsburg went on to win 4-1.
