Champions League and Europa League final tournaments explained

bundesliga.com looks at how the new-look UEFA Champions League and Europa League tournaments shape up with the Round of 16 stages of both competitions yet to be completed.

UEFA Champions League

As it stands

• RB Leipzig are the only Bundesliga team to have secured their spot in the quarter-finals, courtesy of a dominant 4-0 aggregate win over English Premier League outfit and last season's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur.
• Bayern Munich look good to join Leipzig in the last eight after Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski put Chelsea to the sword with a comprehensive 3-0 first-leg win in London, their eighth victory from eight European outings this season, and following on from their record-breaking efforts in the group stage.

What's next?

• Leipzig are one of four teams along with Atalanta, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to have punched their ticket to Lisbon - the newly appointed host city of the competition's quarters, semis and final.
• Bayern's fixture is one of the remaining four ties with a second leg still to play on 7/8 August. Juventus-Lyon (0-1), Manchester City-Real Madrid (2-1) and Barcelona-Napoli (1-1) make up the remainder.

Where will they play?

• Julian Nagelsmann's men are in the hat for the quarter-finals to be played at the Portuguese capital's Estadio da Luz and Estadio Jose Alvalade stadiums.
• A decision is pending as to whether Bayern will have the chance to see out their Round of 16 tie at the Allianz Arena or in Portugal.
• If it's the latter, the Estadio do Dragao in Porto and the Estadio D. Alfonso Henriques in Guimaraes are on standby to host the remaining second legs if needed.

When will the 'final 8' draw be made?

• A draw to determine the quarter-final and semi-final ties will take place at UEFA HQ in Switzerland on 10 July.

When will they play?

• The quarter-finals are scheduled 12-15 August with the semi-finals pencilled in for 18 and 19 August.
• The final is due to take place at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon on 23 August.

Who can play?

• Squads will remain at a maximum of 25 players.
• Leipzig will have to make a decision on whether to extend the loan deals of Angelino and Patrik Schick until the end of the tournament, and Bayern likewise when it comes to Philippe Coutinho, Alvaro Odriozola and Ivan Perisic.
• Timo Werner, who had scored four goals in Leipzig’s eight Champions League matches this season, will not feature after signing for Chelsea, and cannot play against Bayern in the Last 16 second leg as clubs are unable to register newly transferred players.
• Leipzig will, however, be able to replace Werner, with all teams left in European competition permitted to register three new players to their squad lists "provided such players were already registered and eligible for the club since the last registration deadline (3 February 2020)."
• All sides will be permitted to make up to five substitutions per game, but only on three separate occasions during the 90 minutes. Changes can also be made at half-time, and - if extra-time is played - at the end of the 90 minutes and also at half-time of the additional period.

UEFA Europa League

As it stands

• No Last 16 ties have been completed and two - Sevilla-Roma and Inter Milan-Getafe - haven't even played their first legs.
• While those ties with both legs outstanding will now play a single knockout match at an as yet unspecified venue, Frankfurt, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg will all play out their second legs.

What's next?

• Leverkusen are in a similar position to Bayern after their last 16 first leg having seen off Rangers 3-1 in Glasgow.
• Wolfsburg trail Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 after their meeting at the Volkswagen Arena.
• Frankfurt have the difficult task of overturning their 3-0 first-leg defeat at home to Basel.

When and where will they play?

• All Round of 16 ties will be completed on 5/6 August.
• UEFA are still to confirm the venues for the games.
• Germany - named host for the competition's version of the mini-final tournament - is ready to host all upcoming games if needed, which could serve as an advantage for the Bundesliga clubs.

When and where will the Final 8 tournament be played?

• Cologne, Duisburg's MSV-Arena, Fortuna Düsseldorf's Merkur Spielarena and Schalke's Veltins-Arena will each stage games in the mini-tournament, made up of single knockout matches starting with the quarter-finals on 10-11 August before the semis on 16-17 August.
• The aforementioned Champions League draw on 10 July will also establish the Europa League last-eight and last-four ties.
• The remaining Round of 16 matches will kick off at either 6:55pm CEST (12.55pm EDT) or 9:00pm CEST (3:00pm EDT), before reverting to 9:00pm CEST kick-offs from the ‘final eight’ stage onward.
• Cologne's RheinEnergieStadion will stage the final on 21 August.

Who can play?

• The squads are subject to the same regulations as those in the Champions League, with three new additions to the 25-man group allowed even if they have previously played in either UEFA competition in 2019/20.
• In Leverkusen, teen breakout Florian Wirtz may benefit from the Europa League squad rules having impressed since becoming their youngest ever player and the Bundesliga's youngest goalscorer in history last month.
• The enforced delay also means that Germany international Kevin Volland should be fully fit after gradually returning to the first team fold in recent weeks, taking the goalscoring burden off Kai Havertz, which will be a huge boost for Peter Bosz's side.

When and where will they play?

• Bayern are in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League and face the continent's most dominant force, six-time winners Lyon, in a one-game winner-takes-all contest.
• Fresh from defending their domestic crown, Wolfsburg are the other German representatives left in the competition and will take on Glasgow City.
• Both games will be played 21/22 August in either Bilbao or San Sebastian in Spain.

And after that?

• If Bayern manage to dethrone the holders, they will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal in the semis on 25/26 August.
• Atletico Madrid or Barcelona await the winner of the Wolfsburg tie.
• The final of will take place on 30 August at Real Sociedad's Anoeta Stadium.
