Bayern arrived in the capital looking to extend their perfect start to the Bundesliga season, having won all nine matches so far, while they had won all 16 games in 2025/26 across all competitions. The visitors had never lost to Union in 12 previous meetings, winning eight and drawing four. The hosts, on the other hand, were winless in their last two Bundesliga games and had scored in just one of their previous five.

Union started brightly, showing no fear against the league leaders. The hosts thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when birthday boy Ilyas Ansah headed home, but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside. However, the home team's pressure finally told in the 27th minute when Danilho Doekhi fired home from a corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Union Berlin's defensive stalwart Danilho Doekhi fired home the opening goal past Manuel Neuer, giving the hosts a deserved lead against the Bundesliga champions.

A Díaz special

Bayern were being put under severe difficulty, but they found an equaliser through a moment of individual brilliance. Luis Díaz somehow kept the ball in play after an overhit pass from Josip Stanišić and, from a seemingly impossible angle, hammered the ball over Frederik Rønnow into the far corner.

The second half began with Union continuing to compete fiercely despite Bayern's possession advantage. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made his first change just before the hour mark, bringing on Lennart Karl for Serge Gnabry, who made his 300th appearance for the club.

Union remained dangerous on the counter and from set pieces, with Janik Haberer firing over after good work from Rani Khedira. Bayern's best chance came through Michael Olise, whose low shot forced a good save from Rønnow.

Luis Díaz scored one of the goals of the season so far to bring Bayern level at 1-1.

Just as Bayern were pushing for a winner, Union stunned the champions by taking the lead again. Once more, it was Doekhi who found the back of the net, sending the home fans into raptures when pouncing on a miscued clearance from a free-kick.

Nevertheless, with time running out, Bayern's produced a late equaliser as Tom Bischof, who had replaced Laimer, delivered a perfect cross for Kane to head past Rønnow and deny Union a famous victory.

Harry Kane's equaliser was his 13th goal in 10 Bundesliga games this season.

Player of the Match: Danilho Doekhi

Doekhi produced a performance to remember against the reigning champions, scoring twice to nearly secure Union's first-ever victory over Bayern. The Dutch defender showed remarkable composure to fire home both of his goals, with his first strike sneaking past Neuer and his second putting Union ahead with just seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Beyond his goals, Doekhi was solid defensively, helping to limit Bayern's normally free-scoring attack for long periods. His contribution was reflected in him earning the highest Fantasy points total in the match with 422, nearly double that of any Bayern player.
