A first-ever Bundesliga meeting between the teams produced an entertaining stalemate, with both sides picking up a point in a game that saw Fábio Vieira sent off for the visitors at the death.

Fresh from a morale-boosting 4-3 win against Eintracht Frankfurt, Union welcomed a Hamburg side that chalked up their maiden three points of the campaign against Heidenheim on Matchday 4.

The turning point of the match came early when Andrej Ilić failed to convert from the penalty spot, with Hamburg's goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes making a crucial save to keep the scores level.

Penalty heroics keep scores level

HSV dominated the early exchanges, yet it was the Irons who were presnted with the best chance of the half when Diogo Leite was brought down in the penalty area by Rayan Philippe.

Ilić stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his effort was expertly saved by Heuer Fernandes, who dived to his right to push the ball away.

Hamburg continued to dominate possession thereafter, with Philippe particularly active, forcing Frederik Rønnow into several saves.

An entertaining battle was played out in front of a packed house in Berlin.

Chances at both ends in second half

Union mixed things up after the break and the changes added fresh impetus to their play. Indeed, Die Eisernen came closest to breaking the deadlock when Christopher Trimmel's corner struck the post in the 77th minute.

Hamburg also threatened, with Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer firing narrowly wide from inside the box.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the eighth minute of stoppage time when Vieira was shown a straight red card for a dangerous high challenge on Leopold Querfeld as both teams settled for a point.

Hamburg's Fábio Vieira (l.) was ordered off for dangerous play.

Player of the Match: Daniel Heuer Fernandes

The Hamburg goalkeeper was the star of the show, with his penalty save from Ilić in the 10th minute proving decisive in securing a valuable point for his team.

Heuer Fernandes showed excellent anticipation and reflexes to deny the Union striker, and he maintained his concentration throughout the match to make further saves when called upon.

His commanding presence gave confidence to the defence in front of him, helping Hamburg to become the first team to keep a clean sheet against Union Berlin this season.

Heuer Fernandes (l.) will be the talk of the town on the blue side of Hamburg.
