Union Berlin 2-1 Hoffenheim
Goals: 0-1 Baumgartl o.g. 16', 1-1 Voglsammer 22' 1-2 Prömel 73'
Following last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Augsburg via a double from Ihlas Bebou and David Raum’s second of the season, Hoffenheim were looking to extend their unbeaten to eight games at the expense of fellow high-flying Union Berlin. An early chance tailored by Ihlas Bebou to the box found Christoph Baumgartner - but his effort was palmed away by Luthe in the Union goal. Bebou continued to cause problems on the right, this time finding success due to Timo Baumgartl unfortunately glancing the ball past his own keeper. Union were level again five minutes later – Bastian Oczipka delivering a delicious ball to an unchallenged Voglsammer to head onto the crossbar and bouncing off Oli Baumann and into the net. Both teams stayed resolute for the remainder of the half as a reinvigorated crowd at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei continued to set the tone for this feisty encounter during the break.
Andrej Kramaric – still seeking out his 100th goal for Hoffenheim – fluffed his lines with a golden opportunity early in the second half. Most of the half featured both sides cancelling each other out with little attacking menace, but Union almost took the lead on 71 minutes with Oczipka providing a delicious ball into the box with substitute Sheraldo Becker nodding just wide. With this effort, Union sensed an opening and it was again Becker involved in their attacking threat moments later. Zipping behind the Hoffenheim defence, he found Kruse – who saw his shot hit the bar with the rebound falling to Prömel to tuck home for his fourth goal of the season – three of which have arrived in the last two games. Union held on to the end, with three points collected to go level on points with their visitors.
