Demirović rescues Stuttgart from jaws of defeat

Ermedin Demirović's last-gasp goal rescued a point for Stuttgart in a dramatic 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim just when Valentin Gendrey's earlier effort looked to have won the day for the visitors.

Electric start sets the tone

Both teams were quick out of the gates after the opening whistle, creating gilt-edged chances in the first ten minutes. Hoffenheim nearly took the lead in the 4th minute when Adam Hložek rounded the keeper, only for his shot to be heroically cleared off the line by Maximilian Mittelstädt. Stuttgart responded quickly, with Atakan Karazor's header also being cleared off the line by Gendrey just four minutes later.

As the first half progressed, Stuttgart began to dominate possession, but it was Hoffenheim who struck first. In the 45th minute, a poor clearance from Mittelstädt allowed Gendrey to pounce on a loose ball. The Frenchman, making his first Bundesliga start, slotted calmly past Alexander Nübel, giving Hoffenheim a 1-0 lead. The goal, a clinical finish against the run of play, punished Stuttgart's inability to convert their possession into clear-cut chances.

Valentin Gendrey slots home past Alexander Nübel to give Hoffenheim a surprise lead just before half-time.

Stuttgart's relentless pursuit

The second half saw Stuttgart ramp up their efforts to find an equaliser. Chris Führich and Josha Vagnoman came on at half-time to inject more attacking impetus. The home side continued to dominate possession and Hoffenheim's defence, marshalled by the impressive Anton Stach, continued to stand firm.

Oliver Baumann in the Hoffenheim goal was also in inspired form, making crucial saves to deny Deniz Undav and Mittelstädt. As the clock ticked down, it seemed Hoffenheim's resilience would be rewarded with a hard-fought victory. But in the 96th minute, a shot from Undav struck Kevin Akpoguma's arm, leading to a VAR review and a penalty for Stuttgart. Ermedin Demirović stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his initial effort was brilliantly saved by Baumann before he followed up the rebound, slotting home to level the scores in the 99th minute. This, another late equaliser, extended Stuttgart's impressive scoring run to 22 consecutive Bundesliga matches.

Demirovic celebrates what was another dramatic late equaliser for Stuttgart in consecutive Matchdays.
