Key stats
Klanac will provide another goalkeeping option for Vincent Kompany in the USA as Bayern go in search of Club World Cup success. Should he be required on the field, though, the record champions can be safe in the knowledge that they have an up-and-coming safe pair of hands between the sticks.
The shot-stopper spent the first part of his youth with Augsburg before making the short trip across Bavaria to Bayern at the age of 14 in 2021. Within a year, he was making his debut for the U17s against Saarbrücken, conceding once in a 4-1 win, and made one more appearance that year, keeping a clean sheet against Greuther Fürth.
In 2023/24, he established himself as the U17 first-choice goalkeeper and captain, conceding just 23 goals in 25 matches and shutting out the opposition on 12 occasions. That earned him a first call-up to the U19s, with whom he played regularly the following season.
Clean sheets were a little harder to come by, but he did manage three in eight UEFA Youth League games. His performances even earned him a spot on the bench in four UEFA Champions League matches for the senior side, including in both legs of the quarter-final against Inter Milan.
As it stands, Klanac has 11 caps for Germany at youth level, from U15s to U18s. He is yet to concede for the U18s, keeping out Türkiye and England in friendly matches.
Plays a bit like: Kevin Trapp
Standing at 6"0', Klanac is on the relatively short side for a goalkeeper - much like Eintracht Frankfurt and Germany man Trapp, who is just 1.5' taller. The 34-year-old is also the Eagles' captain, while Klanac showed leadership throughout the 2023/24 U17 season, wearing the armband himself for Bayern 24 times.
Did you know?
Leon's brother, Luka, was on the books at Bayern until 2023, when he moved to Ingolstadt. The striker, who at 19 is a year older than Leon, has 11 goals in 34 games for the Bavarian outfit's youth teams since the switch.
What they're saying
"Leon is amongst the most promising youngsters in Germany for his age and position. He has steadily developed with us over the past few years, and we believe in his potential. That's why we're happy he'll be taking the next steps with us on the path to professional football." - Bayern Campus director Jochen Sauer in September 2024, following Klanac's youth contract extension
