Key stats

Born in Gasse, a glamorous town on the Côte-d'Azur that sells itself as the world's capital of perfume, Assignon moved to the other side of France to Rennes in Brittany to develop into a professional

Assignon's goal against Larnaca in the UEFA Europa League drew comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimović in France.

Assignon would have to be patient to make his first-team debut for the Ligue 1 outfit, not appearing during his first two seasons as a young talent in their squad, and spending six months on a successful loan spell at Bastia in early 2021, before being handed his debut as a 21-year-old against Reims in September 2021.

He continued to come in and out of the Rennes team over the following three seasons through injury misfortune in the shape of a cruciate ligament tear suffered in January 2023. The right-back gained valuable European experience with three UEFA Conference League appearances and 10 showings in the Europa League, during which he netted goals against both Larnaca and Villarreal.

Assignon scored and provided an assist for Burnley in a 4-1 Premier League win at Sheffield United in April 2024.

Assignon made 15 appearances on loan at Burnley in the English Premier League in the final months of 2024/25, although his efforts were not enough to save the side coached by current Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany from relegation. Having made his most Ligue 1 appearances last season (32) and gaining a personal best seven goal involvements, he is now taking his promise across the border to Germany.

Plays a bit like: Sacha Boey

Assignon has indeed taken a remarkably similar path to the Bayern right-back, three months his junior, with the pair both breaking through at Rennes. Forward drive with superb speed and a silky ability to dribble and cut inside characterise both of their games, making Assignon a useful attacking option for a side trying to unlock a deep-sitting defence.

Assignon is joining reigning DFB Cup winners Stuttgart.

Assignon's international eligibility remains open. He has not yet received a call-up for France or featured for any youth teams, and as the son of Togolese former footballer Komlan Assignon, could represent the African nation.
