Wolfsburg battle back to draw with Augsburg

Wolfsburg battled back at home to Augsburg with late goals from substitutes Luca Waldschmidt and Felix Nmecha taking them to a 2-2 draw.

Wolfsburg 2-2 Augsburg
Goals: 0-1 Arnold (o.g. 2'), 0-2 Berisha 32' (assist: Engels), 1-2 Waldschmidt 84', 2-2 F Nmecha 90'+6 (assist: Paredes)

Wolfsburg sought to give their European qualification hopes a boost at home to mid-table Augsburg, but were quickly dealt a blow as Maximilian Arnold accidentally headed in a corner after barely a minute of play. Jakub Kaminski and Patrick Wimmer both had early chances to level, and after the latter was brought down in the box by Arne Maier, Wolfsburg captain Arnold stepped up to the spot to seek redemption for his early misfortune, only to blaze the ball over. Further misfortune followed for the Wolves as Yannick Gerhardt headed the ball onto the post and Mergim Berisha finished clinically with Augsburg’s first shot of the game to make it 2-0. The surprisingly comfortable lead allowed the visitors to sit back and complicate the hosts' efforts to fashion opportunities. Arnold sent a good effort on target from distance shortly before the break, but Rafal Gikiewicz turned it around the post, and Wimmer spurned the last good opportunity of the period for the bewildered hosts.

The flavour of the play was unchanged in the second period, with more chances for the hosts sent astray. Gerhardt went around Gikiewicz but fired over from a tight angle. Omar Marmoush then sent the ball into the side netting from short range as Wolfsburg continued to hunt for a way back into the tie as time began to tick away. The visitors defended bravely and even had a chance for a third, with Irvin Cardona missing an opportunity to chip Koen Casteels. Wolfsburg finally got onto the scoresheet with a little over five minutes of regulation play remaining, as Arnold whipped a free-kick in that Waldschmidt struck home. The hosts pressed to complete an unlikely comeback and managed it at the very last moment, with fellow substitute Nmecha bundling the ball in during the sixth and final minute of stoppage time from a Kevin Parades cross. A dramatic, but ultimately deserved draw was therefore secured.
