Wolfsburg have parted ways with head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl in the wake of Saturday's 4-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, a result that saw the Wolves stuck in 12th place on an eight-match winless run.
Wolfsburg were outplayed in their 4-0 defeat away to Borussia Dortmund - their eighth successive match without a win - and, with top-flight survival already secured, the club's directors have opted to begin a new cycle in Wolfsburg by relieving Hasenhüttl of his duties. U19 coach Daniel Bauer will take over on an interim basis.
"Ralph Hasenhüttl took over VfL Wolfsburg last season during a difficult phase," Wolfsburg managing director Peter Christiansen said. "He succeeded in leading the team back to a more stable position. We thank him for that. However, the results and developments in recent months have made us decide to act now. We wish Ralph Hasenhüttl all the best for his professional and personal future."
Hasenhüttl took charge of the Wolves in March of 2024, replacing current Dortmund boss Niko Kovač and did an impressive job of pulling the side out of the relegation zone and securing their place in the Bundesliga for the 2024/25 season. The former Ingolstadt, RB Leipzig and Southampton coach was in the Wolfsburg dugout for 44 matches across all competitions, racking up a record of 17 wins, nine draws and 18 defeats.
The 57-year-old Austrian - who has been nicknamed 'The Alpine Klopp' - leaves the Volkswagen Arena with his team in 12th place on the back of that Matchday 32 defeat to Dortmund - a result that stretched the side's winless run to eight matches. Although the Wolves are assured of top-flight survival, their total of 39 points from 32 matches has left them 11 points shy of sixth and UEFA Conference League qualification.
